What do a tiny biomolecule and a future quantum computer have in common? Both can be explored using one of the strangest tools in modern science: an ion trap. By using electric fields to hold individual charged particles in place, we can study the molecules of life, control single atoms, and rearrange the building blocks of quantum technologies. In this talk, we will follow the surprising journey of ion traps—from understanding how molecules behave to manipulating the quantum world—and discover how one scientific tool can open doors to completely different futures.

Synopsis:
Can I flirt with my date and still talk about my science? Oh sure, I communicate my research well enough to publish scientific articles, present at conferences, and secure funding. Join me as we explore how a topic like chemical chirality can be shared with a non-scientist in a more fun and attractive way, while carefully navigating the bad forms of scientific communication.

“Fear no fat: A practical guide to lipids”
Synopsis:
Fat molecules have a lot of work to do, from building our cells to keeping our hormones in balance. We usually hear that lipids are just bad for us, but the science shows a completely different side. They actually form our cell walls, send essential signals, and store the energy that keeps us moving. Getting to know how lipids really work gives us a much clearer picture of our health.

With a background in medicine and biomedical research, Dr. Olya Vvedenskaya works at the intersection of science and science communication. Her experience includes biotech, healthtech, and edtech, where she translates complex scientific topics into clear narratives for diverse audiences. She focuses on scientific and corporate communications, corporate social responsibility initiatives, and building trusted connections between scientific organizations and communities.

“From Big Bang to Ground Zero and Back: Physics, War and Peace”
Bio:
I'm a postdoc at the Hamburg Nuclear Disarmament Laboratory (Universität Hamburg), where we develop technical solutions for eliminating nuclear weapons programmes. I did my PhD at DESY working on the CMS experiment at CERN, and also spent time working at CERN itself, I specialized in particle physics and detector technology. Now I'm turning that expertise toward one of the most urgent threats facing humanity: the continued existence of nuclear weapons. I've always cared deeply about politics and human rights, and I love making physics accessible to everyone, because understanding the science behind these weapons is the first step to getting rid of them.

“Voices of black holes: How the Einstein Telescope will shape the future of astronomy”
Bio:
Mikhail Korobko is a theoretical and experimental physicist with a PhD in quantum optics and gravitational-wave detection. He is currently a senior research scientist at the University of Hamburg and a member of the LIGO and the Einstein Telescope collaborations. He chairs the LIGO Quantum Noise Working Group and the Einstein Telescope Observatory Design and Noise Budget Working Group.
In 2024, he was awarded the Rudolf Kaiser Prize in recognition of his achievements as an outstanding young experimental physicist. As a member of the LIGO collaboration, he received the Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics for the first observation of gravitational waves. He has published extensively on quantum measurement, quantum optics, and gravitational-wave detection.

“Quantum world within us: from uncertainty to chemistry”
Synopsis:
Quantum mechanics is the wonderful mechanism that governs our World at the small scale. In this talk, we will dive into the basic quantum principles, get acquainted with various concepts, such as the wavefunction and uncertainty principle, and finally learn why we exist as walking-talking (and, hopefully, thinking) biomolecular ensembles, and not just fall apart into a bunch of atoms.
Bio:
I’m a chemist by training and a physicist by demand, currently working at the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science CFEL, Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY in Hamburg, and I also teach at the Svobodny Universitet. My scientific interests have spanned many different fields, from gas electron diffraction to quantum control of chirality, but in recent years I have converged more or less on femtochemistry: studying chemical reactions in real time. I have also written an obscene textbook on quantum chemistry (in Russian) and now do propaganda for quantum chemistry on various social networks. Here at Emigration to the Future, I am also curating this popular-science section.
