The work
Utopia Under Construction treats Berlin not as a fixed map but as an interface that can be rewritten. Participants work with clay, cartography and stop-motion animation to invent alternative rules for how movement, access and priority might operate in the city.
Each participant chooses a real location where mobility feels blocked, unequal or inefficient and asks how it could function otherwise. Clay models become prototypes for new routes, access points and systems of movement, placed directly onto a large map of Berlin. The proposals are then developed into scenarios and animated, allowing the city to operate temporarily according to different protocols.
The final installation combines the map, the objects and the films into a collective speculative infrastructure. It does not propose one ideal city. Instead, multiple incompatible futures coexist on the same map, turning urban planning into a shared rehearsal for ways of moving that do not yet exist.
The festival
Emigration to the Future was an interdisciplinary festival that took place in Berlin-Wedding, 7–9 August 2026, bringing together artists, performers and researchers from seven countries working across performance, installation, video, sound and public intervention. Curated by Vsevolod Lisovsky and Anton Polski (MAKE / Citizen Make), across venues including exBrache, Chto Delat and public space around Wedding.
