The work
Prophecy is part of Bushkunsttheater's spatial performance Through the Magic Mountain. It treats the supermarket as a readable text rather than a neutral retail space.
Products from Lidl's assortment are assigned English words, turning an ordinary receipt into a code. A receipt can therefore be deciphered as a sentence or passage; one festival example contains an encrypted excerpt from Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain.
Visitors can use the same consumerist dictionary to compose messages of their own. As the vocabulary expands, shopping becomes a writing system in which commodities carry language alongside price.
Prophecy turns the supermarket into a book of consumerism — a temporary code whose meaning is produced from the goods circulating through it.
The festival
Emigration to the Future was an interdisciplinary festival that took place in Berlin-Wedding, 7–9 August 2026, bringing together artists, performers and researchers from seven countries working across performance, installation, video, sound and public intervention. Curated by Vsevolod Lisovsky and Anton Polski (MAKE / Citizen Make), across venues including exBrache, Chto Delat and public space around Wedding.
